THE HYDROCHECK SYSTEM R

Hydrocheck constitutes a complete system for water quality monitoring, either in the laboratory or the field.

A comprehensive range of chemical test kits enables most of the common pollutants in water and effluent to be measured down to sub ppm levels and displayed directly in ppm (mg/l) on a spectrophotometer.
A comprehensive range of test kits enable the majority of common pollutants to be measured down to sub-ppm levels.The system comprises four types of reagent kits :

Test kits

Our range of test kits is being continually expanded and for this reason we have set out comprehensive

details for each test kit on a separate Hydrocheck ordering information.

There are several forms of test kit: the SPECTRATEST, MONOTEST, TITRATEST and COLORTEST.

Each kit contains all the necessary reagents and equipment for hundreds of tests.With the TITRATESTS the addition of a reagent called titrant to a water sample produces a colour change with the amount of titrant used being proportional to the concentration of the substance under test.With the other tests the addition of the reagents to a water sample produces a colour.

The strength of the colour is related to the concentration of the substance under test, and can be measured directly with the Hydrocheck Photometer, with the proper test-card inserted.

With no card in place, the readings are displayed in Absorbance units, as with a normal spectrophotometer.

The majority of methods are based on the standard Blue Book methods for water and wastewater analysis, although specially formulated to prevent deterioration of reagents with time.

The Spectratest

Reagents are packed, ready for use, in handy dropper bottles.

The bottles are designed to ensure precise

and repeatable reagent addition and no waiting time for tablets to dissolve.

Where powder reagents are essential, they are supplied with a tiny spoon for easy measurement.

Once the reagents are added to the sample the colour development begins.

After a short time the reaction is complete and the sample is then transferred into a 16 mm round, optically faced cuvette, and placed in the spectrophotometer.

The Monotest

As the name suggests these consist of a single tube for each test.

Each tube is pre-filled with reagent - all you have to do is add the water/effluent sample, replace the screw cap and wait for the colour to develop.

The tube fits directly into the spectrophotometer thereby minimising the risk of accidental spillage.

Monotests have been developed for those analyses where hazardous chemicals are being used or where the benefits of simplicity outweigh the additional cost.

Where a digestion step is necessary this can be performed in the tube itself (e.g.COD).

The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Test

COD is used extensively as a measure of organic load in effluent and other wastewaters.

The COD test is based on standard analytical methods - the closed

2reflux, colorimetric method.

The method involves a two-hour digestion in an acidic medium at 148C, followed by photometric determination.

The nature of the reagents and risk of losing volatile organics in the digestion process make the use of sealed test tubes particularly advantageous.

The Hydrocheck COD test correlates excellently with the titration method, and

substantially reduces both the time taken and complexity of the determination.R The Hydrocheck COD offers a choice of range (O - 160, 100 - 1500, 1000 ~ 10000).

Samples above this range should be diluted then tested.

The Digester

The VELP heating block ECO 8 has prefixed temperatures and times (100 and 148 degrees C) and is suitable for eight 16 mm round cuvettes and one 22 mm mineralisation tube.The VELP heating block ECO 16 has microprocessor controlled temperatures and times with digital display, and is suitable for sixteen 16 mm round cuvettes and two 22 mm mineralisation tubes.Both can be delivered with a transparent safety are packed, ready for use, in handy dropper bottles.

The bottles are designed to ensure precise and repeatable reagent addition and no time waiting for tablets to dissolve.

reaction is complete and the sample is transferred into a simple optical comparator, the colour being compared with the colours of a colour scale.The colour scale indicates the concentration corresponding to a series of colours of increasing strength.By matching the colour of the sample with the most likely colour of the scale it is possible to guess the concentration of the substance under test.

Titratest

In addition to the spectratests, monotests and colortests the Hydrocheck system includes also titration tests.

Each kit includes everything needed to make a determination.

lnstead of using the colour intensity as measured by the spectrophotometer, or guessed by optical comparison; each kit has an accurate syringe and an indicator.

Titrant solution is added until a colour change is visible.

The volume of titrant used is proportional to the concentration of analyte in the sample.

The HYDROCHECK TITRATOR (STEPPER 411) can also be used for other purposes.

Take the case of a water sample which is too concentrated for direct testing with HYDROCHECK COLORTEST or SPECTRATEST.If no glassware is available for the dilution the TITRATOR can be used for that purpose.

Dilution 1 : 5 means that 1 ml has to be diluted to 5 ml.Using the TITRATOR with the syringe graded from 0 to 74 and the blue wheel in position 6 x 500 one has to put two portions of the sample into a test tube.After substitueting the syringe with a clean one (or after washing it thoroughly) fill it with desalted water (or water without the substance to be analysed).Then add to the two sample portions 8 portions of the water (add 6 portions, fill the syringe again with water and add further 2 portions).Most of the COLORTESTS or SPECTRATESTS require only 5 ml of sample.

In these cases the exact quantity of diluted sample is directly available in the test tube.

In the presence of diagnostic reagents the following substances develop a colour whose strength is proportional to the concentration : Ammonia, Chlorine, Chloride, Chromate,

Iron, Phosphate, Hydrazine, Nitrate, Nitrite, pH and Silica.

Their concentration can be found by furnishing the “DROPS” photometer with a

blank followed by a coloured sample.

The DROPS PHOTOMETER gives a direct reading of the Absorbance (Extinction) value.Multiplying this by the factor supplied with each kit allows one to find the concentration in ppm.The reagent quantity in each IPT DROPS kit is sufficient for a large number of tests.

The DROPS PHOTOMETER is a low-cost device with a precision of two digits.It can also be used with HYDROCHECK SPECTRATEST and MONOTEST kits instead of the HC 6000, which is a more sophisticated photometer with three-digit resolution.

TITRATION : THE IPT DROP COUNT METHOD

The following tests can be carried out by

“DROP COUNT TITRATION” : Acidity, p- and m- Alkalinity, Alkalinity in boiler water, Carbon dioxide, Salts of strong acids, Calcium, Chlorides, Hardness, Hardness in boiler water, Hardness precipitation (for demonstrations), sulfite.(Chlorides can also be measured by a colorimetric method)

The titration with the IPT DROP COUNT METHOD is simple, precise and economical.A 5 ml sample is put into the test tube, the indicator added and the titration counting the drops unto the colour change is carried out.The number of drops correspond to the result.
VISUAL COLORIMETRIC TESTS WITH IPT LIQUID REAGENT METHODS

In the presence of diagnostic reagents the following substances develop a colour whose strength is proportional to the concentration : Ammonia, Chlorine, Chloride, Chromate, Residual hardness, Iron, Phosphate, Hydrazine, Manganese, Nitrate, Nitrite, pH and Silica.There are double kits for Chlorine and pH, suitable for swimming pools.

The approximate concentration can be estimated by simple comparison of the sample with a colored scale supplied with each kit.

25.SALTS OF STRONG ACIDS

1.

Remove the dropper from the empty bottle and rinse bottle thoroughly with the water to be analysed 2.Half-fill the funnel with activator.Rinse down the activator into the empty bottle with a few drops of the water to be analysed 3.Fill the bottle up to about 2/3 with the water to be analysed, put the dropper into the bottle and cap it tightly 4.Shake the bottle for 5 minutes, about 2 times a minute, each time 10 - 15 seconds.5.Squeezing the bottle put about 2 ml into the test tube and rinse it.Repeat 2 or 3 times 6.Drop 5 ml water from the bottle into the test tube 7.

Add 1 drop m-indicator (acidity kit !) and swirl.If the water becomes blue it doesn’t contain any salt of strong acids and the test is ended.In the presence of strong acids the sample becomes reddish yellow.

8.Add titrant (acidity kit !) drop by drop, mixing after each addition.

Count the drops to the colour change from reddish yellow to blue (the colour change goes through green and the endpoint is reached when the colour becomes definitely blue).

Each drop corresponds to 0,2 epm (10 ppm CaCO3) salts of strong acids.NOTES : - For this test both kits SALTS OF STRONG ACIDS and ACIDITY are needed.

26.SILICA
1.

Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.

2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.

3.Add 4 drops Reagent A and swirl well.4.

After 10 minutes add 4 drops Reagent B and, after swirling,

4 drops Reagent C.

5.After a further 10 minutes (colour development) compare the colour of the sample with the comparison scale and read the concentration on the scale.

6.If the sample contains more than 3 ppm SiO2, dilute a new sample with silica-free water (perfectly demineralized water).Operate as above and multiply the read value by the dilution.

27.

SULFITE

1.Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.

3.Add 2 drops Reagent A and swirl well.

4.Add 2 drops Reagent B and swirl again.The sample remains colourless.5.Add titrant drop by drop, swirling after each addition.

Count the drops until a blue colour appears.The Sulfite value is given by the number of drops multiplied by the value indicated on the bottle (2 ppm SO3 = 3.14 ppm Na2SO3).

18.HYDRAZINE

1.

Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.3.Add 15 drops Hydrazine Reagent and swirl well.

4.After 10 minutes (colour development) compare the colour of the sample with the comparison scale and read the concentration on the scale.

19.IRON

1.

Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.3.Add 6 drops Iron Reagent and swirl well.

After about 5 minutes (colour development) compare the colour of the sample with the comparison scale and read the concentration on the scale.

20.NITRATE

1.Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.

2.

Inject 2.5 ml of the water to be analysed into the test tube with the measuring syringe.3.Add 1 level spoon No.3 Nitrate Reagent and swirl well for about 1 minute.

4.After 10 minutes (colour development) put the comparison scale flat on a table under good light (but NOT direct sunshine).Put the (outside dry) test tube on the scale and compare the colour lokking from above.Read the nitrate value of the most similar colour on the scale.

21.NITRITE

1.

Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.

3.Add 6 drops Nitrite Reagent and swirl well.

4.After about 10 minutes (colour development) compare the colour of the sample with the comparison scale and read the concentration on the scale.

22.PH IN SWIMMING POOLS (6.8 - 8.4)

1.Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.

Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.3.

Add 2 drops pH-Indicator 6.8 - 8.4 and swirl well.

4.Compare the colour of the sample with the comparison scale and read the pH-value on the scale.

23.PH 0 - 5

1.Rinse test tube well with the water to be analysed.2.Fill test tube up to the 5 ml mark with the water to be analysed.3.

Add 2 drops pH-Indicator 0 - 5 and swirl well.

4.

Compare the colour of the sample with the c+_omparison scale and read the pH-value on the scale.
